The Joker and Batman, Part II: Dwight Howard’s dark side emerges


LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. — The bubble bike rides are mostly an older-guy affair.

Denver coach Michael Malone is a regular on the path that winds around the inner part of the Walt Disney World campus, flying past all the hotels that are home to NBA teams and the lakes that house all sorts of fish, turtles and even the occasional alligator. Before the Toronto Raptors were eliminated recently, their coach, Nick Nurse, would do the same.

But every so often, during all the downtime that comes in between Lakers games and — in this particular case — amid a scarcity of playing time, you’ll see the muscle-bound Dwight Howard cruising around with a peaceful disposition and his 6-year-old son in tow. It’s an adorable scene, the kind of thing we’d never see if not for this unprecedented setting. If you didn’t know any better, you’d think the 34-year-old father didn’t have a mean bone in his body.
