On the one-year anniversary of Twitter users finding “MILF hunter” porn in his likes, rumored Zodiac Killer* Ted Cruz was tweeting about — what else? — genitalia. The Ben Shapiro-owned conservative outlet The Daily Wire published an article about The Daily Show (no relation) host Trevor Noah being “offended” by gender reveal parties, and the Texas senator subsequently quote-tweeted it with: “A fair point. Many liberal males never grow balls.” As we all know, conservatives have, like, two jokes, and both of them are transphobic.
The reference in question is a 30-second clip from The Daily Show, temporarily renamed to The Daily Social Distancing Show during these COVID times. It went viral among conservatives the day prior to Cruz’s poorly timed tweet because of Noah’s apparently audacious claim that “celebrating a baby’s genitalia is starting to feel a bit outdated.” (Where is the lie, though?) Naturally, right-wing media lost its collective marbles, with Fox News, The Blaze, and The Washington Examiner all publishing articles “slamming” Noah.
For whatever reason, gender reveal parties have become the latest right-wing hill to (maybe literally) die on, as the hills of California are currently on fire thanks to none other than… a gender reveal party. 2020, right?
Despite the common conservative talking point that opposition to the gender binary is an affront to science (it’s not), right-wingers like Cruz are equally as bent on ignoring the growing mountains of evidence that human-caused climate change is a problem. Cruz, for example, is a vocal climate change denier, which is the main driving force behind the increasingly catastrophic fire seasons on the West Coast. By mere coincidence, Cruz has also been the recipient of more than $1 million in campaign donations from the oil and gas industries since 2011.
Elsewhere, Cruz — never a stranger to hypocrisy — recently put aside his diatribes against so-called “cancel culture” by engaging in it. He led a call to #CancelNetflix over Cuties, a coming-of-age film concerning the sexualization of young girls directed by Maïmouna Doucouré, on the false premise that the film contains child nudity. He’s gone so far as to write a letter to the Justice Department urging an investigation of the possibilities of child exploitation during production, despite the fact that a) it’s a French film and b) it specifically critiques the very same misogyny that Cruz and other conservative politicians claim to be against.
