Norm Macdonald slams Bette Midler for tweet smearing Al Franken accuser Leeann Tweeden

Comedian Norm Macdonald slammed singer Bette Midler in a tweet Wednesday night after Ms. Midler posted a photo purportedly showing one of former Sen. Al Franken’s accusers wearing lingerie.

Ms. Midler posted the lingerie photo allegedly showing Leeann Velez Tweeden, who was the first of several women whose sexual misconduct allegations against Mr. Franken led to his resignation in 2018. In her tweet, Ms. Midler accused Ms. Tweeden of being “right-wing.”

“#LeeAnnTweeden, #AlFrankens accuser, in all her right wing glory,” Ms. Midler wrote. “Al was forced to resign, without anything resembling due process, amid HER allegations that something ‘untoward’ happened between them.”

The photo sparked a wave of backlash, prompting Mr. Macdonald to fire back at Ms. Midler in a tweet comparing her to “rape apologists.”

“Bette, if you haven’t heard, #metoo has nothing to do with due process,” he wrote. “But you putting a picture of this women in lingerie, implying she had it coming, is truly disgusting and what rape apologists have been saying forever. Shame.”

Ms. Midler has a long history of making controversial comments on social media. Just Wednesday she was slammed for suggesting, without evidence, that black supporters at President Trump’s recent rally were paid to be the president’s “blackground.”
