Lil Nas X Is Here to Save SNL From Elon Musk

Lil Nas X wants you to call him by his new title: Saturday Night Live musical guest.

The “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)” singer will be the musical guest on the show’s May 22nd season finale, alongside host and The Queen’s Gambit star Anya Taylor-Joy.

Nas X made the announcement on Twitter earlier today, captioning a photo of the iconic blue and pink SNL lineup cards, “Saturday Night Live MONTERO +NEW Song 5/22.” He also used an orange heart and the sweating pig emoji, as one does.

This also means new music is on the horizon. Nas X tweeted in March that his long-awaited debut album Montero will drop this summer. He still hasn’t announced an official release date.

Also announced today is the May 15th show, hosted by Keegan-Michael Key and musical guest (and noted driver’s license holder) Olivia Rodrigo. These final two SNL performances will be a much-needed palette cleanser following this weekend’s SNL, which features alleged meme stealer Elon Musk as host and queer mullet activist Miley Cyrus as musical guest.

Musk’s hosting is controversial, Cyrus’ singing (of late) is less so. The show usually taps a Hollywood celebrity, athlete or politician to host. It’s rare they pick a CEO, let alone the second richest person in the world. Insider reported last week cast members Bowen Yang, Andrew Dismukes, and Aidy Bryant all recently deleted social media posts referencing Musk. They didn’t speculate as to why.

But fans of the show certainly will. As MarketWatch reported, Musk took to Twitter, as he’s also prone to do, and asked for SNL skit ideas. Quickly, actor Bradley Whitford encouraged him to stop union-busting, Marianne Williamson said donate “half your fortune” to social justice causes, and activist Cameron Kasky proposed giving his money “to people who need it.”

So, unless he somehow dazzles both viewers and cast members on Saturday, Musk is likely not in the running for favorite SNL host of the year. Sorry to that man.
