John Wall’s future: Potential fits, contract hurdles and is a Kyle Lowry-like renaissance possible?

After meeting and seeing eye-to-eye on the direction of the Houston Rockets, the franchise and John Wall have agreed on working together to find a new home for the five-time All-Star guard, sources tell The Athletic.

The plan is for Wall to remain present around the Rockets entering training camp, which begins late this month, and to not play in games for Houston this season, sources said. Wall is entering his second year in Houston after spending most of his career with Washington. Sources said there are no buyout plans on the two years, $91.7 million remaining on Wall’s contract — including a $47.4 million player option for the 2022-23 season.

With Wall’s future uncertain, The Athletic’s Sam Amick and David Aldridge got together to discuss his time in Houston, potential landing spots across the NBA and more.

After years of injuries, what did Wall prove in his one season with Houston?

Amick: Man, this is a tough one to answer. You’re always thrilled to see a player who has been through hell physically find a way back, and it seemed like that might be the case in those opening weeks of his time in Houston.

But there’s a major difference between the guy we saw in 2020-21 — even at his best — and the guy who made five All-Star teams while leading the Wizards franchise in all those years before. That’s just the harsh truth.

The 31-year-old had some big nights, but his already-shaky efficiency and productivity plummeted (his true shooting percentage of 50.3 was a career-low, as was his player efficiency rating of 15.46).
