Jayson Tatum’s 53 points saves Celtics from ugly loss amid mounting pressure


As Jaylen Brown was streaking all alone on the break, it seemed like the perfect moment to break out a triumphant slam to potentially clinch a hard-fought win. But then he did something unexpected and dropped it off behind his back to his teammate, partner, fellow star and prime rival for shine in the city of Boston.

He knew this was Jayson Tatum’s night. In a moment when he could steal a little bit of the spotlight from Tatum passing Larry Bird to become the youngest Celtics player to score 50 points, he happily declined.

“That’s big, and everybody recognizes how unselfish that was of him,” Tatum said after beating Minnesota 145-136 in overtime. “Just to know the night I was having and he could easily have scored it and we would have still had two points, it shows the growth in all of us.
