Isola: On eve of free agency, the Knicks are once again on the outside looking in


NEW YORK – This is historically a dangerous time of year for the Knicks, because it is in late June and early July when James Dolan, the billionaire blues singer, likes to freestyle without using his harmonica.

Like that time in 2010, when Dolan insisted on leading the Knicks’ free-agent meeting with LeBron James and did so by reading off cue cards. The pitch was such a disaster that the Knicks dispatched two front office executives back to Cleveland days later to salvage free agency. When that didn’t work, Dolan left it up to his trusted advisor, Isiah Thomas, to pull off a Hail Mary but to no avail.

When the dust finally settled LeBron ended up in Miami and the Knicks overpaid for Amar’e Stoudemire and his damaged knee.
