Center of attention: Jeff Green enjoys playing the 5 for Rockets

The Houston Rockets are getting center production from an unlikely source.

Newly signed Rockets veteran Jeff Green, who has gotten significant run at the 5 in his first few games with Houston, said on Monday that he was perfectly comfortable with playing the position.

“It’s not a challenge. It’s just basketball,” said Green, per Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle. “It’s something I’ve done most of my career. I’ve done it from my rookie year to now. Playing multiple positions … at the end of the day, it’s about playing with confidence, playing with heart.”

The 6-foot-8 Green, who has been a combo forward virtually his entire career, is averaging 7.8 points and 2.7 rebounds in 18.4 minutes per game thus far for Houston. The Rockets have gone all-in on small ball ever since trading longtime center Clint Capela to Atlanta in a deal that netted them Robert Covington.

Green has gotten similar burn in much higher-pressure situations before, so he should have no problem being the backup 5 the Rockets want him to be.
