With timely home runs, Reds launch themselves into the playoff picture


CINCINNATI — With the Reds’ doubleheader sweep of the Pirates, the team now sits just one game behind the Cardinals for the second playoff spot in the National League Central, having leapfrogged the Brewers, who split a doubleheader against St. Louis on Monday.

“The momentum is real,” Reds manager David Bell said after the team’s 9-4 victory over the Pirates in the second game of the doubleheader. It was the team’s third consecutive win and the third time in two days that the Reds had given up a lead only to retake it and win the game.

The Reds sit at 23-26 with 11 games remaining in the season. That’s not where anyone had hoped they’d be at this point — the team made its official hashtag on Twitter #TakeTheCentral, not #TakeSecondInTheCentral.
