The NBA has become a league where one eye is always on the next star to hit the market and which teams could get him. It makes sense: Stars are gold. They win games and rebuild franchises.
The Knicks need one. They’ve longed for one since prime Carmelo Anthony. They thought they had one in Kristaps Porzingis. Now, it’s on to the next one.
Tom Thibodeau has already spoken about the importance of landing a star player.
“I think it’s critical,” he said in December. “When you look at every team in the league, particularly the playoff teams, there’s a lot of different paths to getting stars … Sometimes you have to do it through trade. Sometimes it’s free agency. You have to be very aggressive in seeking out those opportunities. They just don’t happen by accident. You have to make them happen.”
