Up against John Wall: G League players schooled by rehabbing guard


WASHINGTON — John Wall is a performer without an audience. Never has that been clearer than during his G League team’s final practice before the NBA season’s abrupt halt.

Yes, an NBA All-Star is now part of the Wizards’ G League affiliate and had been practicing with the Go-Go regularly before the league chose to suspend the season almost three weeks ago because of concerns about the novel coronavirus. Until then, Wall was scrimmaging regularly, every three days or so, depending on scheduling quirks.

On this early March afternoon, he was participating in a routine one-on-one drill. The ball had swung around the perimeter and eventually would go to the ball-handler at the top of the key, who was allowed up to three dribbles to make a move. The defender — in this case, a sacrificial lamb named Garrison Mathews — would scurry inside the 3-point line, fundamentally closing out and hoping to deter a basket.
