The Stars of Schitt’s Creek Keep Teasing a Movie Reunion

Moira Rose might finally get a chance to snag her long-awaited Oscar.

In the beloved TV series Schitt’s Creek, Catherine O’Hara plays Moira, an eccentric actress who at one point shoots scenes for her iconic “comeback” film The Crows Have Eyes III and delivers a performance so odd it deserves Oscar gold. But audiences of the celebrated series aren’t satisfied with just this one cinematic depiction of the life of the Roses.

Since it went off the air last April, series co-creator Dan Levy has been asked ad nauseum about the possibility of creating a real Schitt’s Creek film. In fact, he told Town & Country last week that he’s hopeful about the possibility of adapting the Emmy-winning Canadian series into a movie.

“We had such a great time making the show and I think if the idea is right, I would love to explore what a movie could look like. But, I don’t have that idea yet,” Levy told Town & Country. “I’m still searching for it. So, my fingers are crossed, but I also think you need to give people a little time to miss you.”

It makes sense why fans want more Schitt’s Creek. The series was more than just a sleeper hit: It sweeped the 2020 Emmys, winning Outstanding Comedy Series and every acting category in which it was nominated. This is in addition to nominations at the Critics’ Choice Television, Screen Actors Guild, and Canadian Screen Awards. The show also won two consecutive GLAAD Media Awards for Outstanding Comedy series, including one this past April.

Anytime a critically acclaimed show with a cult audience wraps, questions arise about a movie. Just look at Sex and the City or Veronica Mars or Downton Abbey. And Dan Levy has spent much of the last year fielding questions about a possible Schitt’s Creek movie.

Levy made clear to Town & Country there aren’t any tangible plans in place, but hopes to “see what happens in the next couple of years.” So, for now, a Schitt’s Creek movie is just wistful manifesting. But he’s not the only cast member thinking about bringing the Rose family to the big screen.

Levy’s comments come in response to his Schitt’s Creek co-star Annie Murphy also saying she’d like to see a movie made. In May, Murphy told US Weekly she’d be “over the moon” to reunite on screen with her Schitt’s Creek crew. “I mean, I’ve been sending Dan $5 a day in the mail as a bribe. So far, I have not heard back about a movie officially,” she said jokingly.

If the movie ever does come, it likely won’t be for a few years. The cast has stayed booked and busy since the show went off the air in April of last year. Murphy is currently starring in the new dark comedy Kevin Can F**k Himself on AMC as a renegade sitcom wife bored of her Schitty (excuse the pun) husband. The show premiered yesterday on streaming service AMC+ and will debut on AMC the channel this Sunday, June 20.

Dan Levy isn’t slacking off, either. Last year, he played Kristen Stewart’s gay best friend in the Hulu Christmas movie Happiest Season and appeared in the HBO TV film Coastal Elites. In February, he hosted a very gay episode of Saturday Night Live with Phoebe Bridgers as the musical guest — and that’s all in addition to signing a three-year overall deal with Disney-owned ABC Studios for a reported eight figures.

Yet this isn’t the first time Levy has addressed the idea of a Schitt’s Creek flick, either. As Variety reports, he addressed the possibility with the press backstage at the 2020 Emmys. In November, he told E! News of the same loose possibility of a Schitt’s Creek movie. That same month, he also told People, “I don’t think there’s a single person on our team, cast or crew, that wouldn’t want to come back for a movie.” Dan, at this point, we’re just begging you to make the Schitt’s Creek movie of our dreams for your own well-being — and so people stop asking you about it, too.
