Taal volcano update: Magma on the move as 92 earthquakes hit Philippines volcano overnight

The Philippines volcano, which sits south of the capital Manila, then erupted again on January 13 and coated parts of Luzon island with a thick blanket of ash.

As of Tuesday morning, the alert level for Taal stands at 3, meaning magma is near or at the surface and could lead to an eruption in a matter of weeks.

According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology (PHIVOLCS), a 4.3-mile-wide (7km) danger zone now extends around the fiery mountain.

PHIVOLCS said: “Activity in the Main Crater in the past 24 hours has been characterised by weak to voluminous emission of white to dirty white steam-laden plumes 100m to 800m tall that drifted southwest.

“Sulphur dioxide (SO2) emission was below instrumental detection.”
