Source: NBPA’s Michele Roberts rejected seven-figure bonus after sports shutdown


National Basketball Players Association executive director Michele Roberts declined a seven-figure annual bonus earlier this year, a source said, joining the ranks of other high-profile sports executives to forgo compensation in the COVID-19 era.

Her compensation fell to $1.47 million in the year that ended June 30, 2020, according to the NBPA’s annual report filed this week with the Department of Labor. In the previous 12-month period, the NBPA paid her $2.85 million, the union’s annual report shows for that year, meaning her pay fell 48 percent. The sum in the annual report does not distinguish between bonus and salary, but the source said, “There was no reduction in Michele’s base salary, but she elected not to request a bonus.”

Roberts is the first woman to run a union for players in the largest U.S. sports, and had planned to step aside before the pandemic, but stayed on to steer the NBPA through the difficult restart…
