And then, after wasting the chance to break Sandgren in his first service game, the world No 3 goes from three break points to deuce, including one high-speed ace.
A brilliant one-handed backhand from Sandgren soon sees him level the match once more.

A beautiful forehand after Federer moves to the net and then an error from the Swiss sees the American maintain his serve.

Federer opts to serve after winning the toss and he starts off with an ace. He’s not at his absolute best though and finds himself having to save a break point.
Sandgren’s left knee is heavily taped but he’s moving well, though it’s Roger who claims the first game.
4.05am: Still waiting for the pair to come out on court.
Ahead of the clash, Sandgren warned Federer that he’ll be raring to go in the Melbourne sunshine.
He told reporters ahead of today’s match: “I haven’t had that many looks or wasn’t supposed to. The fact that I am [in the quarter-finals], I get amped up.
“I want to perform. I want to do well. I don’t want to take the time on the court for granted.
“Getting to play in a big stadium, in front of a lot of people, because I’ve played a lot of tennis in front of very few people, the fact I get to do that seems to bring out the best tennis in me.”
3.55am: Barty vs Kvitova is all over and it’s the Aussie who is through to the final four, much to the delight of the Rod Laver Arena crowd.

3.45am: Federer comes into this one as a massive favourite, but Sandgren is no rookie. The 28-year-old reached this same stage of the Australian Open two years ago.
And Swiss icon Federer is surprised his opponent in 97 places below him in the ATP rankings.
“I wonder why he’s not ranked higher, to be honest,” he said.
“Every time I see him play, I feel like he plays very well.
“He’s got a lot of stuff in his game that he’s deserving of being higher.”
3.30am: Good morning! Or afternoon, depending on where you are.
It’s quarter-final day at the Australian Open and Roger Federer is the man in action, taking on world No 100 Tennys Sandgren (yes, his name really is Tennys) on Rod Laver Arena.
A six-time champion in Melbourne, Federer is looking to set up a potential semi-final showdown with reigning champion Novak Djokovic, who plays on the same court against Milos Raonic later today.
Before Federer takes to the court, women’s world No 1 and home hope Ashleigh Barty is in action against Petra Kvitova, last year’s runners up. Neither of the pair have ever won this tournament.
