RJ Barrett continues to impress in his third season in New York.
Barrett led the Knicks to a 108-85 blowout of the Mavericks on Wednesday night, making history in the process; with his 32 point performance, the 21-year-old became the youngest player in Knicks history to log 30 or more points in consecutive games. Barrett had 31 points in Monday’s win over the Spurs.
Barrett got off to a slow start as he didn’t make his first field goal until the 4:16 mark in the first quarter, but he quickly poured in six points by the end of the period, punctuated by an emphatic left-handed slam in transition.
It was a quiet second quarter for Barrett, but he heated up again in the third, scoring 11 points to help New York extend its lead to 84-66 heading into the fourth.
That’s when Barrett really took off — literally and figuratively. His first basket of the fourth quarter was a breakaway, double-clutch dunk after a steal — one that gave the Knicks what was at that point their biggest lead of the night. He finished with 10 points in the fourth, capped off by a three in the final minutes that gave him the record.
Barrett broke the record previously held by Kristaps Porzingis, who now plays for the Mavericks but didn’t play Wednesday as he remains in the NBA’s healthy and safety protocols.
Through 34 games this season, Barrett is averaging 16.2 points, 5.4 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game. The Knicks sit at 21-21 with the win and are currently tied with the Celtics for the 10th seed and final play-in spot in the East.
