Reneé Rapp took to X on Monday to set the record straight (or gay, as it were): She’s a lesbian, and please stop questioning it.
Though Rapp at one time pitched herself as “the bisexual Justin Bieber” to her record label, she’s been explicitly referring to herself as a lesbian since at least the beginning of this year. As Autostraddle reports, the singer vaguely referred to herself as a lesbian throughout the Mean Girls press tour last year, but explicitly said “I don’t think I like boys” in a January 9 episode of Andy Cohen’s SiriusXM radio show. Since then, Rapp has been referring to herself as a lesbian all over social media and in interviews. In a February TikTok of her lip-syncing to her single “Tummy Hurts,” she wrote, “writing this then coming out as a lesbian i contain multitudes.”

Rapp also literally said “I’m a lesbian” in a Hollywood Reporter interview this February, so it’s safe to say that even if she hasn’t made an official ~coming out post~, her identity is crystal clear. Yet people have continued to make the singer’s sexuality an object of speculation, at least gauging by the way she put her foot down in a post on X Monday afternoon.
“if I say I’m a lesbian I am a lesbian and if someone says they’re bi they are bi,” Rapp wrote. “I’ve had enough of you witches.”

Fans stood behind Rapp in replies to the post. “anyways i love LESBIAN reneé rapp, all my oomfs love LESBIAN reneé rapp,” one person wrote, alongside an edit of several clips in which she refers to herself as a lesbian. Another pointed out that Rapp is way more respectful of her fans and their sexualities than people seem to be of her own.
The singer didn’t specify the source of her ire, but it’s sadly unsurprising that she’s faced pushback. From Cardi B having to remind people that she’s bi to Heartstopper’s Kit Connor being forced to come out to halt queerbaiting accusations, it seems like queer celebs are constantly having their sexuality litigated by the general public. Which is a real shame, because we’re living in something of a golden era of sapphic pop stars. What if we all set aside the discourse and simply vibed? I’m sure that’s what Rapp would want.
