‘Plenty of gas but need to train how to use the brakes’: How Zion Williamson’s explosiveness may contribute to injury


Zion Williamson is a force-producing machine. But with great power comes great responsibility. That power, capable of destroying shoes and opponents, comes with risk to the mortal tissues of the body.

Last week, the Pelicans announced that Williamson underwent successful surgery to address a lateral meniscus tear. A relatively simple and quick procedure, the surgery usually involves arthroscopically cutting away a torn piece of one of the two meniscii, the crescent-shaped padding between the tibia and femur of the knee joint. Since there wasn’t a repair or reconstruction of damaged or torn tissue — surgeries that require more extensive protection of the healing area — the recovery from a meniscus tear is relatively quick, usually without spending significant time immobilized or with crutches.
