Penguins defeat Lightning 6-2 after Tampa Bay raises Stanley Cup banner

The Pittsburgh Penguins entered Tuesday’s game against Tampa Bay watching the Lightning raise their 2021 Stanley Cup Champions banner. They left with a lopsided 6-2 win on the NHL’s opening night.

After a scoreless opening period, Pittsburgh — playing without stars Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin — seized momentum with goals from Danton Heinen and Brian Boyle. Dominik Simon, Teddy Blueger, Evan Rodrigues and Bryan Rust would later score in the third to secure the victory. Goaltender Tristan Jarry added 26 saves as the Penguins began the 2021-22 campaign unbeaten.

Pittsburgh scored three empty net goals, becoming the first team to do so in a single game since the Red Wings on Oct. 26, 1984, against the Sabres.

Anthony Cirelli and Andrew Killorn added the lone Lightning goals.
