Oram: Lakers credibility, not cap space, is the most important factor in landing max free agent


Rob Pelinka did it. After weeks of scrutiny, second-guessing and head-scratching, the Lakers general manager reached the mountaintop. He successfully managed to expand the supertrade for Anthony Davis into a super-duper deal that now has Moe Wagner, Isaac Bonga and Jemerrio Jones going to Washington. Three prospects dispatched to the nation’s capital so the Lakers could create a little capital.

That bit of pantry clearing, combined with Davis reportedly agreeing to decline his $4.1 million trade bonus, gives the Lakers $32 million in mad money come Sunday.

Deep breaths, Lakers fans. Still a long way to go.

The Lakers now have the salary-cap space to make a push for Kawhi Leonard or Kyrie Irving, but that’s only one piece of the puzzle. Pelinka and his two most powerful recruiters, LeBron James and Davis, must still find the right person to take it.
