Sportsmail understands Conceicao has been spoken to by officials from the St James’s Park club and he would open to making the move from Portugal.

The 44-year-old former Portugal international has been in charge of Porto since 2017.

Conceicao replaced Nuno Espirito Santo after he left the Portuguese giants to become Wolves manager.

He led them to their first title in five years in his debut season before being pipped to the championship by just two points by rivals Benfica last season.

Conceicao was initially appointed on a two-year deal but has since signed two new contract extensions and is now committed to the club until 2021.

Manchester City assistant Mikel Arteta and Burnley boss Sean Dyche are two other names under early consideration in Newcastle’s search for a new manager, which is being led by managing director Lee Charnley.

Sportsmail revealed on Wednesday that Dyche would cost around £10m to lure away from Burnley, the cost of the remainder of his three-year deal at Turf Moor.

Meanwhile, Arsene Wenger has admitted he is not yet ready to return to football after being connected with the job at Newcastle.

The 69-year-old Frenchman, who ended his 22-year reign as Arsenal boss in May last year, has been out of the game since and is one of a series of names to have been mentioned with the Magpies post.

However, Wenger is not planning an imminent comeback, saying: ‘(I’m not planning a comeback) in the near future, no. I still am not ready to go back. I thought “Yes”, but I don’t think at the moment I will come back.’
