Marcus Rashford injury: Manchester United will make decision on shoulder surgery in ‘coming days’, says Solskjaer

What has been said?

Speaking on Rashford’s injury status, Solskjaer said: “First with Marcus, we’ll probably make decision in next few days when we check him up again, the last decision-making.

“What’s best for him and best for the club has to be considered.”

When asked for a fitness update on Rashford’s club and international team-mates Maguire and Shaw, Solskjaer added: “With the boys who’ve not come back yet, I don’t know.

“Everyone’s due in for training Monday, that means it’s three weeks since last game.

“Fred at the Copa America and English finalists.

“So we’ll see how they are, what fitness levels they’re at, because it’s down to them what they’ve done during the holidays as well. I can’t just throw them in if they’re not fit enough.”

What is the extent of Rashford’s injury?

Rashford has been managing a muscle tear in his left shoulder since November, with the problem restricting movement and causing discomfort.

Pain-killing injections have been used to help him continue playing. The issue is not expected to deteriorate, but Rashford would like to have the corrective procedure to regain full fitness for the coming campaign.

How did Rashford perform at the Euros?

Rashford made five appearances during the Euros, all as substitutions.

The 23-year-old never played more than 25 minutes per game, with his shortest stint on the pitch lasting one minute in extra time before the penalty shoot-out against Italy in the final.

Rashford took the third penalty which hit the post. He has since received large amounts of racist abuse for failing to score his spot-kick.

What league games could Rashford miss?

United begin their 2021-22 campaign at home to Leeds on August 14 before travelling south to face Southampton on August 21.

The course of recovery is projected at 12 weeks which would mean Rashford misses a number of games in the 2021-22 season.

This means even if he has surgery in the coming days his recovery period could last up until the end of October. By the middle of October, United will have played eight Premier League matches, including games against Everton, Leicester City and West Ham.

They host Liverpool at Old Trafford on October 23, followed by games against Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City.
