Kevin Durant is coming to New York, but not the Knicks as franchise remains in the wilderness


For nearly a year, the Knicks have circled around Kevin Durant. The chatter was too loud to ignore, the NBA consumed by conjecture the organization could finally land a star it has coveted for so long.

When this offseason began, it welled up with new expectations for the Knicks. Despite just 17 wins and one of the worst seasons in their history, they were expected to exit the summer with a newly minted set of stars, or one at the very least. No less than owner James Dolan had crowed that this July would be a “game-changer” for the franchise.

Sunday, the Knicks finally received word on Durant’s future. It would be in New York after all, but not in Manhattan. Kevin Durant will sign with the Nets next month when the league’s moratorium period ends, The Athletic’s Shams Charania reported.

A team lost in the wilderness for nearly two decades now will remain searching. Durant, one of the NBA’s best talents, will go somewhere else — so…
