Julio Torres to Sashay Into Film With A24 and Tilda Swinton

Julio Torres is headed to the big screen. In what will be his first major film endeavor, the 34-year-old comedian will write, direct, and star in an upcoming movie produced by A24, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Tilda Swinton is reportedly attached to star opposite Torres, who will produce alongside the indie darling studio. Emma Stone and Dave McCary are also producers on the film under their Fruit Tree banner, which launched last year.

Torres, who recently made the leap from TV to film with a small part in the Patti Harrison-starring indie drama Together Together, wrote for Saturday Night Live from 2016 to 2019, famously co-creating the instant gay classic sketch “Wells for Boys,” and has regularly appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and Late Night With Seth Meyers.

Torres starred in his first HBO comedy special titled My Favorite Shapes in 2019, an unconventional routine in which Torres rattles off his favorite shapes — as the title would imply — with accompanying anecdotes, stories, and jokes.

In addition to his forthcoming multi-hyphenate project, Torres’ acclaimed HBO comedy Los Espookys is slated to return for a second season as well. The Spanish-English series follows a group of horror-movie enthusiasts as they try to turn their love for the genre into a successful business. The show is set in a fictional Latin American country suffused with preternaturally eerie vibes. Los Espookys also stars Fred Armisen, Bernardo Velasco, Cassandra Ciangherotti, and Ana Fabrega.

Torres’ directorial debut with A24 is still under development and details are scant. All we know from the initial report is that it’s a comedy.

But if Torres’s résumé is any indicator of what to expect, we’re all in for a good time.
