For Nuggets guard Gary Harris, defensive wizardry runs in the family

Lin Dunn is burning through the scouting report. It has been almost 30 years, but it is as if she can still see her former All-American running up and down the court in West Lafayette, Ind.

“An unbelievable defensive player.”

“You couldn’t pass over her and you couldn’t pass around her because of her ability to anticipate.”

“One of those players where when she jumped, she’d come down and jump right back up.”

“When everyone else is frozen, she’s moving.”

“We always put her on the opponent’s best player.”

If that breakdown sounds familiar to Nuggets fans, that’s because Joy Holmes Harris, before she was the mother of Denver’s best defender, knew a thing or two about playing lockdown defense herself. As a sophomore at Purdue in 1989, she recorded 12 steals in one game against against Minnesota, which still stands as a school record.
