Early thoughts on Clippers 2021 second-round pick Brandon Boston Jr.

The Clippers moved into the 51st pick in the 2021 NBA Draft to acquire Kentucky shooting guard Brandon Boston Jr., with the Clippers sending New Orleans cash and a future top-55 protected pick (in other words, a pick that is unlikely to convey). Here’s Boston, 19, at a glance:

Strengths

Great measurements for a wing in today’s NBA at 6-foot-7 with a 6-foot-11 wingspan. Still growing into his frame and will always be relatively thin but should be able to add real strength in the next few years. Has terrific body control and fluidity. The key skill for Boston is his scoring ability. Has a real ability to change directions as a driver with shifty hips and a tight handle. That’s what made him such a highly sought-after prospect as a collegiate recruit. Has real shake getting to his jump shot. Most comfortable from the midrange area. Strings together multiple moves in a row, and he particularly loves the crossover. Above all, tries to get to the stepback to his left, which is a translatable shot to the next level. Not a particularly efficient scorer but has an upside that a lot of wings don’t if his jumper improves. His handle is pretty creative.

Fashions himself more as a driver. Loves to try to get downhill in space and off an advantage. Makes quick decisions off the catch and attacks. Gets out on the break and attacks there, as well. Not afraid of contact and often ends up initiating it to try to get more space to get his shot off. Understands how to attack the front foot on closeouts. When driving, good at making decisions and making passes to teammates. Not a selfish player, but doesn’t always see what’s happening around him, which leads to missed chances. As he reads defenses better with experience, he should be able to make more dangerous passes, as opposed to the escape passes currently made.
