Chelsea transfer news: Erling Haaland primary target this summer

Why is Haaland so coveted?

Chelsea’s interest in Haaland, as reported in David Ornstein’s weekly column, is no surprise. Though he is only 20, the Norweigan has already proved he is a top-level striker with his pace, power and devastating finishing ability.

Since joining Dortmund last January, Haaland has scored 35 goals in 35 games, firmly establishing himself as one of the best young players in the world.

Haaland has proved himself to be an effective presser of the ball, capable of participating in build-up play and able to finish with both feet and his head — he is a complete forward.

How much will Dortmund demand?

Haaland has a release clause in his contract worth €75 million (£66.6 million) which is not active until the end of the 2021-22 season.

Dortmund, who are reluctant to lose their star man, will therefore demand significantly more than the release clause for them to consider letting him go this summer instead.

Why now?

Given the impact of COVID-19 on many club’s finances, Chelsea feel the end of the season is the opportune time to move for one of the world’s most sought-after talents — despite the ambitious nature of the move.

The west London side are aware they face stiff competition for Haaland’s signature, but they believe many of their rivals will wait for the summer of 2022 and the release clause to kick in.

Chelsea are also keen to bring in another centre-forward, given the expectation that Olivier Giroud will leave when his contract expires in June.

What else is in the column?

David Ornstein’s weekly column has news on the Premier League monitoring goal celebrations, Arsenal’s ‘No 10’ shirt and Tariq Lamptey’s new contract.
