Celtics' Marcus Smart to donate blood plasma for COVID-19 research

Boston Celtics star Marcus Smart recently was cleared after testing positive for COVID-19, and now he’s going to do his part in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic.

Shams Charania of The Athletic shared Tuesday night that Smart plans to donate his blood plasma to the National COVID-19 Convalescent Plasma Project, which is doing research on the blood of people who have recovered from the novel coronavirus.

According to the FDA, “It is possible that convalescent plasma that contains antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes COVID-19) might be effective against the infection.”

New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton, who was also recently cleared after testing positive for COVID-19, is another high-profile sports figure who will help by donating his blood plasma.
