Multiple graded stakes winner and two-time Sovereign Award winner Mr Havercamp, a fan favorite at his home base of Woodbine, has been retired. Trainer Catherine Day Phillips tweeted May 31 that the gelding suffered an injury to his pelvis during a workout at the track on May 30. According to Day Phillips, he is expected to recover fully.
Mr Havercamp is a homebred for Sean Fitzhenry, who raced the horse with Dorothy Fitzhenry. His 2018 season earned him Sovereign Awards both as Champion Grass Horse and Champion Older Horse after he won the Grade 2 Autumn and G2 Play the King, and finished second in the G1 Woodbine Mile.
Mr Havercamp was returning from a layoff, having won the G3 Forbidden Apple in 2019 and finished fourth in last August’s G3 Seagram Cup.
Bred in Ontario, Mr Havercamp is by Court Vision out of Medaglia d’Oro mare Tennessee Lamb.
Day Phillips indicated that Mr Havercamp will be retired on her farm in Maple, Ontario when his recovery is complete. There, he will join fellow retirees four-time Sovereign Award winner A Bit O’Gold (now 19 years old) and Grade 1 winner Jambalaya (now 18 years old) in turnout.
It is with a heavy heart that we announce the retirement of multiple Canadian Champion Mr Havercamp. We are all so grateful for the journey that he has taken us on!
