Brighton goal disallowed: Dunk free kick ruled out as Lee Mason blew whistle before ball crossed the line

What happened?

In the 28th minute at The Hawthorns, Alexis Mac Allister was fouled on the edge of the West Brom box.

As Dunk was lining up the free kick, Mason blew his whistle. West Brom goalkeeper Johnstone had not yet finished setting his wall and was standing on his right post when Dunk placed the free kick into the empty side of the goal.

Mason blew his whistle a second time after Dunk had taken the free kick, and both sets of players immediately surrounded the referee to argue their case.

At first, the goal was disallowed, before Mason appeared to change his mind. He then was instructed to use the pitch-side monitor and, after consultation with the VAR, Simon Hooper, Mason reversed the decision to award Brighton the goal.

Why did Lee Mason blow his whistle for the second time?

The Athletic understands Mason saw Johnstone was not ready and quickly blew his whistle again.

Why was the goal eventually overruled?

VAR checked whether the second whistle was blown before or after the ball had crossed the goal line.

The second whistle came before the ball crossed the line and so the ball was dead.

VAR decided to rule the goal out and play restarted with the free kick being retaken.

What else happened in the game?

West Brom took the lead in the 11th minute as Kyle Bartley headed home a Conor Gallagher corner.

Brighton had the chance to equalise eight minutes later as Okay Yokuslu was ruled to have handled the ball in the box, but Pascal Gross’s penalty hit the bar.

The away side were awarded a second penalty in the 74th minute after a foul by Conor Townsend, but substitute Danny Welbeck hit the post to compound Brighton’s misery.

After the disallowed goal and missing two penalties, Brighton lost the game 1-0.
