Gorillas and polar bears at a zoo were given cool and refreshing sorbets as Europe is gripped by a heatwave.

Zookeepers presented both animals with big blocks of frozen water with different fillings to suit their taste.

The alpha-gorilla snatched half of the fruit and veg filled treat to himself, leaving the rest to seven others.

Prague zoo’s eight western lowland gorillas were given two ice blocks hanging from ropes outside their enclosure.

The pick-me-ups contained bits of oranges, apples, pears, kiwis, carrots, pineapples and mangos.

The primates stuck to a clear hierarchy, with Richard, the dominant male of the group, seizing one of the chunks to himself.

Three polar bears had one block each waiting for them on the floor.

The blocks also contained carrots and apples but the main ingredient was fish.

Unlike the gorillas, the bears didn’t waste time, consuming their treat in just a few minutes.
