Zion cleared to return with no restrictions

Recent imaging of New Orleans Pelicans power forward Zion Williamson’s right fifth metatarsal showed continued improvement, the team announced Thursday. Williamson has been cleared in his return to play without any restrictions.

The 2021 NBA All-Star missed this entire past season with a fractured foot suffered prior to last year’s summer league. Williamson has played 85 games for the Pelicans since being drafted as the No. 1 pick in 2019, boasting averages of 25.7 points, seven rebounds and 3.2 assists on 60.4 percent shooting from the field.

Williamson’s four-year rookie deal is set to expire in 2023, but he’s eligible for an extension this summer.

When asked last month whether he would sign an extension if offered one, he said: “Of course. I couldn’t sign it fast enough.”
