A zebra has well and truly earned its stripes after breaking free from the jaws of a crocodile twice its size in southern Kenya.

Dramatic photos show the brave zebra biting back against the eight-foot crocodile while crossing the Mara River on the Great Migration – one of the great spectacles of nature.

The migration is a matter of life and death. It sees thousands of wildebeest and zebras attempt to cross the croc-infested Mara between July and August, according to discoverafrica.com.

On the other side of the river is an odyssey of green grass and water.

Many of the animals do not make it and are killed by crocodiles or in a stampede.

However, this zebra dealt a mighty kick to the 444-pound crocodile, who was scared off after being bitten in the neck.

With no time to lose, the zebra made a quick dash for freedom.

Zig zagging between Kenya and Tanzania, the Mara River is about 245 miles long.

As well as being a deadly test of the fittest and fastest zebras, it is also crucial to their survival – replenishing the surrounding wetlands with life all year round.
