Yohe’s 10 observations: Sluggish Penguins stunned in OT by Kraken

Jared McCann got his revenge.

The Penguins got what they deserved.

McCann, the former Penguins forward who was fairly incensed when he was traded to Toronto last summer, scored the game-tying goal as the expansion Seattle Kraken stunned the high-flying Penguins in overtime, 2-1, at PPG Paints Arena on Thursday.

The Penguins are on an extraordinary run, having gone 17-2-1 in their past 20 games. But this wasn’t one of their better performances and, in particular, they allowed the Kraken to completely dictate play in the third period.

“In the third period, we beat ourselves,” Mike Sullivan said.

Did they ever. The Penguins were a turnover machine in the third period and were also back on their heels throughout most of the period, which was somewhat puzzling, given that the Penguins had the puck on their blades almost exclusively during the first two periods.

Evgeni Malkin scored the game’s first goal on a rocket in the third period, giving the Penguins the lead and giving a quiet building plenty of life. Malkin, though, was guilty of a couple of gruesome third-period turnovers.

Adam Larsson scored the game-winner 1:17 into overtime.

The Penguins still earned a point in this game, which isn’t insignificant.
