Yankees’ Matt Carpenter fouls pitch off foot, suffers fracture vs. Mariners

New York Yankees designated hitter Matt Carpenter fractured his left foot in Monday night’s game against the Seattle Mariners, New York announced. Carpenter fouled a pitch off his back foot in the first inning and initially stayed in the game, then exited in the third inning.

Carpenter, 36, signed with the Yankees in May after starting the season on a minor-league deal with the Texas Rangers. The three-time All-Star had enjoyed a comeback year to this point, slashing .305/.412/.727.

New York lost five straight games heading into Monday night and held a single-digit lead in the American League East for the first time since June 15 as the Seattle series got underway.
