Yankees acquire Joey Gallo from Rangers

How Gallo will help Yankees offense

Lindsey Adler, Yankees beat writer: One of the most shocking things about the Yankees’ underperforming offense has been the lack of power. As a team, the Yankees have a .397 slugging percentage this season. Left-handed production is even more elusive, as lefties are hitting .197/.297/.338 for the Yankees this season.

Gallo seems made for the second deck at Yankee Stadium. He’s a pull/straightaway hitter who hits the ball harder than most other players in baseball. Expect swings and misses, but also plenty of slug.

Did New York give up too much?

Adler: The Rangers appear to be taking a volume approach to their return for Gallo, but they’re expected to receive multiple prospects in return. The Yankees are not expected to give up Jasson Dominguez, Clarke Schmidt or Anthony Volpe in the trade. They’re also not expected to send any major-league level players to Texas for Gallo.

The Rangers will be getting a good package of prospects from the Yankees, but the equation is this: A season-and-a-half of Gallo with pitcher Joely Rodriguez in exchange for a group of minor leaguers that do not include their top three prospects.

Why this trade made sense for the Rangers

Levi Weaver, Rangers beat writer: Had a few things broken differently, the Rangers’ rebuild might be rounding out into contention right now. Nomar Mazara, Rougned Odor, Chi Chi Gonzalez and a few names later, it’s evident that the window of contention isn’t opening this year or next.

Thus, it was either extend Gallo or trade him while his value was highest. The ages of the reported players coming back — 25, 23, 22, 22 — should give an indication of where Texas sees its next core: a strong Double-A team in Frisco.
