World Cup: England and other home nations targeting 2030 hosting bid

What does the list say?

The UK Sport list contains 97 sporting events the organisation hopes to bid for, has already bid for or has already secured over the next decade.

Huge sporting competitions such as the football World Cup, cricket World Cups and Ryder Cup have been labelled ‘Mega Events’, while the majority have been termed ‘Major Events’.

What has been said?

UK Sport chief operating officer Simon Morton said: “FIFA have made some significant and important changes to the bid process, it has become significantly more transparent,” he said.

“Some said that the (2018) bid was perhaps a bit too insular — well we’re talking about a five-nation bid, so the tone is completely different.

“This is pioneering, this is unprecedented in terms of what we’re talking about. So I think those things give us confidence that after 11 years since the last bid, things have the potential to be different this time around.”

Which other football events are coming to the UK?

This year’s UEFA Super Cup will be played in Belfast on August 11, and will have at least one representative from the UK after Chelsea and Manchester City reached the Champions League final.

The Champions League final in 2024, meanwhile, will be played at Wembley Stadium on May 25.

The Women’s European Championships in 2022 will also take place in various locations in England.

When did England last bid for the World Cup?

England infamously bid for the 2018 World Cup back in 2010. Despite large public support and confidence from the bid team and the government, their efforts were in vain as the bid fell flat on its face.
