Woolf Award-Winner Luis Quinones Breaks Pelvis, Fractures Hip In Mountaineer Spill

Winner of the George Woolf Memorial Award last year, jockey Luis Quinones went down in a spill during the third race Monday night at Mountaineer Casino Racetrack and Resort. The 41-year-old Ohio-based rider suffered a broken pelvis and a fractured hip during the incident, according to agent Billy Johnson, and will undergo surgery Wednesday morning.

Quinones was aboard Shared Silence for trainer Claudie Godsey, Jr., when the 5-year-old mare took a bad step and fell near the three-sixteenths pole. Shared Silence fell on top of Quinones; she was vanned off the track and had to be euthanized. Devilish Magic, ridden by Jordano Tunon, was unable to avoid the wreck and unseated her rider, but walked off the track under her own power.

Tunon ran to Quinones’ aid immediately after the wreck occured, helping to dislodge the rider from underneath Shared Silence.

“I acted right away, as soon as I saw Quinones on the ground,” said Tunon, who was sore but otherwise uninjured Tuesday morning. “He was in a very dangerous position. I had to get the horse off of him, so I pushed the horse over and I grabbed him under the shoulders and pulled him away from the horse. He was telling me he couldn’t feel his body, and I was just waiting for the ambulance to get there.”

“It could have been a lot worse,” echoed Quinones’ agent, Johnson.
