Wolves confirm Raul Jimenez suffered fractured skull

What happened?

In the fifth minute of the match Luiz attacked a Willian corner and clashed heads with Jimenez.

Concerned players from both teams immediately waved on the medical staff, who raced to treat both Luiz and Jimenez.

After treatment, Luiz proved fit enough to continue the match. But Jimenez was transported to an ambulance and taken to hospital. He underwent an operation on his skull later that night.

What have Wolves said?

Wolves published a short statement to their website on Monday morning.

It read: “Raul is comfortable following an operation last night, which he underwent in a London hospital.

“He has since seen his partner Daniela and is now resting. He will remain under observation for a few days while he begins his recovery.

“The club would like to thank the medical staff at Arsenal, the NHS paramedics, hospital staff and surgeons who, through their skill and early response, were of such help.

“The club ask that Raul and his family are now afforded a period of space and privacy, before any further updates are provided in due course.”

Why was Luiz allowed to continue?

Premier League rules stipulate that players who suffer a confirmed or suspected loss of consciousness must be removed from the field of play and prevented from returning.

Players who do not lose consciousness must undertake an assessment to determine whether or not they have suffered a concussion. A club’s medical staff asks the player questions, such as what stadium they are playing at. If it is suspected the player has suffered a concussion they are not allowed to continue playing.

Luiz passed a concussion test and was therefore allowed to continue playing, albeit with a large bandage wrapped around his head. However, after a second test at half-time, it was decided that Luiz should not continue and he was replaced by Holding.

In his post-match interview, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said: “The doctors went through all the protocols. David wanted to continue but at half-time we took him out because he wasn’t comfortable heading the ball.”
