Without Trevor Lawrence, freshman D.J. Uiagalelei leads Clemson to win over BC

Why Saturday showed Clemson’s future is in good hands

Grace Raynor, Clemson beat writer: Clemson knew it had its quarterback of the future when it landed Uiagalelei on the recruiting trail in May of 2019. That future is in good hands. From the very first drive, when Uiagalelei picked up the blitz and hit Etienne for the touchdown, it was clear he had both the poise and the knowledge Clemson needed on a day like Saturday. On a day when Frank Ladson did not play and Joseph Ngata was a nonfactor, Uiagalelei got the job done without either of the Tiger’s projected top two downfield threats from the preseason. But senior slot receiver Amari Rodgers, senior field receiver Cornell Powell and Etienne all rose to the occasion, and Uiagalelei had a crucial score with his legs, as well. Clemson has found its next “generational” quarterback.

Is there reason to be concerned about the defense?

Raynor: Clemson’s defense was carved up early and often. Jurkovec was sharp with his first three passes of the day going for 35, 13 and 11 yards, respectively, as Boston College got on the board about two minutes in. The Eagles’ second drive of the day was equally efficient: six plays and 75 yards in just over two minutes. If Brent Venables’ defense plays the way next week against Notre Dame that it did in the first half Saturday, it’s going to be in trouble. But a key turnover-on-downs and game-sealing safety were the differences for a unit that always seems to adjust. He’ll have his pick of mistakes to show this week in practice, but the Tigers rose to the occasion when it mattered.

Looking ahead to Notre Dame

Raynor: Lawrence’s timeline for Notre Dame remains fluid. Swinney told the broadcast before the game started that he was solely focused on trying to beat Boston College, and the Tigers should get more clarity in the coming days. The most important, unanswered question regarding Lawrence’s situation is when his symptoms began. His positive test was Wednesday and he must spend 10 days in isolation. Before he can play, he also must pass a thorough cardiac evaluation as part of a re-acclimatization period. The low side of that period for Clemson athletes has generally been two to three days.
