Willson Contreras will have to create his own electricity this season


When Willson Contreras pounds his chest from second base or points to the sky when he steps on home plate, he will be surrounded by a sea of empty seats this season. As someone who feeds off the energy at Wrigley Field, the bright lights and the roar of 40,000 fans, Contreras will have to adjust to playing through fake crowd noise.

“I will have the same mindset,” Contreras said. “I got to think that there’s fans watching me from home. I know it’s different, but they’re still watching us. They’re still looking at us like heroes. I’ll be doing 110 percent.”

When Yu Darvish pitches, Contreras will be watching from the bench or the makeshift dugout extension or whatever other social distancing measures the Cubs are implementing this season. David Ross watched Monday’s workout from a Sheffield Ave. rooftop building because of a pending COVID-19 test that ultimately came back negative.
