Why Zion Williamson and the Pelicans turned out to be a match made in heaven


Watching Zion Williamson walk into the Ochsner Sports Performance Center on Friday was like watching the coronation of a new king in New Orleans.

Between the media, coaches, members of the front office and ownership, there had to be close to 100 people in the Pelicans practice facility waiting for the 18-year-old to hold his first press conference in New Orleans since being taken with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft.

Zion showed up an hour later than expected, but there was little to no grumbling about his tardiness. Why would there be any complaints? He’ll soon be changing the lives of everyone that was under that roof.

Once he entered the room, Pelicans workers rose to their feet and gave him an effusive standing ovation that immediately put a giant smile on Williamson’s face.
