Why Novak Djokovic is US Open favourite over Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal – EXCLUSIVE

Novak Djokovic is the favourite to win the US Open, according to Greg Rusedski.

World No 1 Djokovic has won two Grand Slam titles already this season – the Australian Open and Wimbledon.

However, he fell to a surprise semi-final defeat against Daniil Medvedev at the Cincinnati Masters earlier this month.

But the 32-year-old always plans to peak at the major tournaments and that is why former British No 1 Rusedski is tipping the Serbian for success at Flushing Meadows.

“Only one man in history to do three majors in a calendar year so I think he is the favourite,” Amazon pundit Rusedski told Express Sport.

“He peaks well and is trying to catch Federer and Nadal’s Slam counts.

“He is on 16 and if he wins the US Open he is on 17, that is just three behind Federer and one behind Rafa.

“He wants to go down as the greatest ever to play the game and his head-to-head is better than their head—to-head against him.

“He has got a winning record against both them guys.”

If Djokovic wins the US Open he will move to within one of Nadal’s Grand Slam tally and three behind Federer’s all-time record.

However, has a history of elbow injuries which he will have to stave off to keep his momentum in check.

Djokovic is younger than both of his rivals so time is also on his side.

“I think he will (beat Federer’s Grand Slam tally) if he stays healthy,” Rusedski added.

“The only thing he has had is a slight elbow problem but physically he looks great.

“I don’t see why there can’t be a few more years if he can keep his mind, hunger and desire there, I think he will catch them when it comes to the Slam count.”
