Why Giannis Antetokounmpo is using lawsuits to protect his Greek Freak trademark


Graphic designer Monte Eady is a lifelong Bucks fan living in Milwaukee.

So Eady designed a “Greek Freak” T-shirt last year to honor the Bucks’ Greece-born star, Giannis Antetokounmpo, for winning NBA Most Valuable Player honors and for Milwaukee’s playoff run to the conference finals, he said.

Eady sold fewer than 20 shirts online and never intended to make money off the apparel as they were for friends and family, he said.

Problem is, Antetokounmpo has trademarked his “Greek Freak” nickname. Eady, in a series of tweets in March aimed at Antetokounmpo, said he stopped selling the shirts after getting a cease-and-desist letter last October from the player’s lawyers. That led to more legal wrangling, none of which Eady wanted to discuss in specifics other than to say he has taken out a small loan to cover a cash settlement to the lawsuit.
