What we learned about the Vikings from their first open practice of the season


The first day of training camp doesn’t necessarily tell us all that much about how the season is going to progress. This time last year, Jordan Taylor was the Vikings’ third receiver while Bisi Johnson was struggling to hold on to the ball, with more impressive performances coming from Dillon Mitchell and Chad Beebe. Jake Browning was an afterthought to Kyle Sloter. And Armon Watts was stuck as a third-team defensive tackle, even with Linval Joseph recovering from surgery.

That said, the first day of media access to training camp gave us a headstart on what the Vikings are planning. Here’s what we noticed from Friday in Eagan.

Injuries

Two players weren’t at camp because of placement on the reserve list, with linebacker Cameron Smith tagged with a non-football injury as a result of a congenital heart condition that will require open-heart surgery.
