What to know about ‘Big Stew’ ahead of his Florida debut


GAINESVILLE, Fla. — When the gentle giant was a middle school student, he spoke of becoming an orthopedic surgeon. Then the dream shifted to neurology. Now Stewart Reese, all hulk-and-bulk at 6-foot-6 and 350 pounds, aspires to attend med school for anesthesiology.

“You could have a perfect surgery,” he said, “but if somebody doesn’t wake up, there’s no point.”

With liability risks fueling a national shortage of anesthesiologists, Reese sees an opportunity. Just like the former Mississippi State offensive lineman foresaw an opportunity at Florida this spring when he entered the portal as a graduate transfer.

The native of Fort Pierce, Fla., had been recruited to MSU by Dan Mullen and offensive line coach John Hevesy and felt he made his biggest strides under their watch in 2016 and 2017.
