What Oregon is getting in new defensive coordinator Tim DeRuyter


Mario Cristobal has seen Tim DeRuyter’s work up close.

It stood out to the coach when the Ducks were shut out for a half, and it really jumped out when the same defense pulled it off against Oregon in successive seasons.

So when Andy Avalos departed on Jan. 9 to become the head coach of Boise State and Cristobal once again needed a new defensive coordinator, he didn’t need to look outside of the Pac-12 North.

Oregon has not made an official announcement as of Friday afternoon, but is in the process of finalizing its deal with DeRuyter, according to sources with knowledge of the situation.

A former linebacker at Air Force, DeRuyter, 58, spent 2012-2016 as head coach at Fresno State and has been a defensive coordinator at Ohio, Navy, Nevada, Air Force, Texas A&M and Cal. He and the Bears limited the Ducks to 17 points in 2019, then again in 2020 as previously winless Cal forced three turnovers and allowed no points in the second half of…
