What offseason? Drug policy progress, what matters at OTAs and other thoughts from around the NFL


There’s no downtime on the NFL calendar, so we’re rolling out a new weekly collection of offseason nuggets from across the NFL. This week brings us new health initiatives, another round of owners meetings and all 32 teams on the field for voluntary workouts — the closest thing we’ll get to real football until summer.

Newsworthy: The NFL’s announcement this week that it had formed a joint committee with the NFL Players Association to study pain management, including the potential benefits of medical marijuana and the effects of opioids, is a major step, one a long time in coming. It’s long been thought that the drug policy would be a big part of negotiations between the league and union on the new collective bargaining agreement, and it’s promising that both sides aren’t waiting until 2020 or 2021 to collaborate beyond funding medical studies. The health and safety of current players and those approaching retirement are too important for this issue…
