On Tuesday, the Washington Capitals will reach the midpoint of the season. Just 27 days after that, the NHL’s trade deadline will come and go.

In other words, things are about to get interesting in D.C.

Since a four-game losing streak early last month, Alex Ovechkin and Co. have reeled off an impressive 11-2-1 record in their last 14 games, good for the second-best record in that span. But it hasn’t been perfect. Case in point: the Caps, who are 4-1-0 in their last five, have averaged 3.8 goals per game during that stretch but have allowed an average of 3.4, including eight in the third period.

So, yeah, there are some things for general manager Brian MacLellan to ponder.
