What happens to Washington NFL team merchandise if there’s a name change?


As the Washington NFL team embarks on a likely team name change after years of public and legal fights over the racially charged moniker, what becomes of the hundreds of thousands (perhaps millions) of articles of apparel bearing the old logos and brand? If the team has come to accept the name is a racist slur for Native Americans, does it forbid fans from entering FedEx Field wearing the old gear? Are those old Hogs jerseys, the No. 44 John Riggins shirts and the like, hate symbols?

“This is a country that’s changing by the day,” said consultant Alex Cobbold, one of Under Armour’s first hires who served as director of sports marketing for more than eight years. The executive says the change would lead to questions of how people will be perceived if they are still sporting Washington’s old paraphernalia at football games.
